Dec. 20, 2009 The Haleiwa International Open is celebrating 40 years of Aloha! Monday, December 21, 2009, officially kicks off the waiting period to the World's most prestigious big wave amateur surfing event. The Haleiwa International Open formerly known as the Mabo Royal has been a Haleiwa staple since its inception. The Haleiwa International Open (HIO) is a grass roots community fundraiser by the Friends of Alii Beach (non-profit org) and supporter of the Haleiwa Menehune Surfing Championships, supporter of the summer and winter Ocean Recreation Programs at the Haleiwa Surf Center. This event is about “Spreading the Aloha”! When the event started the focus was to carry out the tradition of welcoming the traveling Japanese surfers to surf and enjoy the waves at Haleiwa's Alii Beach. Now 40 years later that tradition is still strong and growing. With this year being the 40th Anniversary, Fine Artist Clark Takashima stepped up to do the events artwork! This beautiful painting of Haleiwa is what dreams are made of and it's as if you were looking right at the real thing. Clark also generously donated the Original 24 x 18 Giclee acrylic on canvas for the Leonard Foster Sr. Memorial Award. This perpetual award will be awarded for a special Individual by the Foster Family. For all information on the Haleiwa International Open check the event website: |
